It’s that time of year again to decide who is your favourite “Best of Grand County”. If you’re new to the area you’ll quickly learn that Grand County has three major newspapers; The Winter Park Times, The Grand Gazette and the SkyHi News. The Winter Park Times and The Grand Gazette both cover valley-wide news and events, however the Times primarily focuses on the Winter Park and Fraser area while the Gazette tends to cover Kremmling, the West Grand district as well as neighbouring affairs in Summit and Routt counties.

SkyHi covers all of Grand County and is perhaps one of the most well-known of the three newspapers with two weekly publications. Each year they host the “Best of Grand” competition where the general public and readers are asked to nominate then vote for individuals, businesses and organizations within Grand County.

This year there are six different categories: Arts & Entertainment, Community, Food & Drink, Services, Shopping and Sports & Recreation. Because Grand County is such a small community, it’s no surprise that nearly every business, organization and event has been nominated. As part of its marketing plan, SkyHi offers discounted advertising packages to nominees. Candidates who purchase advertising receive priority, online placement of their ad in the categories they have been nominated for. Still, it makes for a competitive, yet fun-filled event for all.

This years’ Service nominees include Grand County businesses large and small and are broken down into several subcategories like Child Care, Banking, Massage etc. Voters choose the best Grand County law firm, select their favourite automotive mechanic, dentist as well as the best cleaning service.

The Arts and Entertainment category includes a Community Events subcategory where voters opt for their favourite venue like the “Lions Club Pancake breakfast”, “RKY MTN WALLS – Granby Mural Fest”, “The Vagina Monologues” and more. The Arts and Entertainment category also has entertaining subcategories like “Best Place for a Romantic Date”, “Best Late-Night Scene” and even “Best Place to Impress Out-of-Towners”. People can also vote for their preferred place to get a bloody mary, the best deck/patio in GC and the best place to fish.

Aside from advertising and bragging rights, BOG winners receive plaques at the annual awards ceremony and are featured in the yearly SkyHi “Best of Grand” publication. The annual edition is helpful to newcomers and locals alike looking for recommendations in GC, be it cocktails, locally made products or the best place to shop for marijuana.

There’s still plenty of time to view each all the nominees in each category, perhaps visit candidate locations and place votes. Voting is open now until September 15, 2019. We’ve including the link below to SkiHi News online BOG contest for your convenience.
