If you’ve lived in Grand County for any period of time then you’re probably not surprised to learn that World Property Journal recently named two iconic Grand County properties as their top 5 favourite Western Ranches in America and we agree.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch ranked number three on their list. Its history began as a homestead ranch built in the 1930’s by one Margaret Radcliff who used it as a dairy.

Some ten years later three brothers with the surname of Yager created what is known today as Devil’s Thumb Ranch. They incorporated the earlier Radcliff structure into the property’s facilities.

The name Devil’s Thumb comes from a distinct rock formation high atop the Indian Peaks that can be seen miles away from the main lodge. The brother’s operated the ranch as both a working and dude ranch until the 70’s when Nordic cross-country skiing became an added attraction.

Today Devil’s Thumb Ranch spans 6000 acres where people from all walks of life come to experience the Colorado Rockies. Guests snowshoe and ski in the winter months, and enjoy outdoor events like horseback riding, cattle driving and fly fishing in the warmer months.

Amenities are bountiful and accommodations range from lodges located within the main complex to four-bedroom cabins just a few minutes away. Casual to fine dining is offered along with an exceptional, world-class spa. Its sister properties include the Vasquez Creek Inn and the Trailhead Inn in Winter Park.

Sitting at number two on the Journal’s list is the C Lazy U Ranch who’s celebrating its golden anniversary. Like their distant neighbour to the southeast, the C Lazy U was also a homestead property that operated as a guest ranch in 1919 under the ‘F Slash Ranch’ name until 1946, when its name was changed to the C Lazy U.

Known for its “5-Spur Service,” C Lazy U is considered Colorado’s premier, year-round guest ranch getaway. Spanning 8,500 acres, it features a collection of 43 rustically elegant cabin accommodations, fine dining and a full-service spa.
The ranch offers an abundance of summer outdoor activities including horseback riding, swimming, tennis, bicycling, hiking, fishing, hunting, and more.

In winter month’s they offer snowcat excursions, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, sledging, tubing, ice hockey, ice skating and other seasonal activities. Their Kids and Teens Program include trips to local rodeos, whitewater rafting and overnight camping.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch and C-Lazy-U are major employers of Grand County and each strives to provide exemplary customer service to their guests. In 2015. C-Lazy-U GM David Craig won the 2015 Hotelier of the Year Award from the Colorado Hotel and Lodging Association.

In February of this year, Devil’s Thumb appointed Dan Abrashoff as their new GM. His focus has been building upon “the sense of place” guests experience when they visit Devil’s Thumb.

Leadership from both ranches were instrumental in providing feedback to our current workforce and housing challenges. Both have and continue to provide valuable feedback on the Work in Grand webpage. They both continue to work with Grand County town and county departments to better our community.
