Job Description
Position Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for overseeing seasonal crews, grounds and trails upkeep, snow removal, and fleet maintenance. This position supports the work of the YMCA of the Rockies, which operates a mission-based family and group conference and retreat center, serving more than 225,000 annually.
Essential Functions:
- Minimum of two years’ experience operating heavy equipment preferred.
- Ability to safely operate all hand and power tools common to equipment repair and use all personal protective equipment necessary to safely do assigned work.
- Plow snow regularly during the winter months. Will include weekends, early mornings, late evenings, and holidays.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment and vehicles.
- Able to work independently and be self-directed.
- Ability to responsibly purchase parts for repair of equipment and vehicles.
- Perform and record daily safety and maintenance checks.
- Maintain and service all equipment following manufactures recommendations.
- Experience with operation and routine maintenance of heavy and light equipment and vehicles, including but not limited to: backhoe/front end loader, dozer, motor grader, skid-steer loader, trencher, track hoe, dump truck, snow plowing equipment, tractors, fleet vehicles, mowers, and chainsaws.
- Able to spend long hours working on and operating equipment.
- A high level of attention to detail and ability to thoroughly complete each job task.
- Ability to work from blueprints and rough sketches and to produce sketches and plans for utility work, along with mapping of existing and new utilities.
- Promote a cooperative, positive and problem-solving atmosphere at all times.
- Communicate with coworkers and manager to ensure a quality product and timely completion of products.
- Assist in the Auto Shop as needed to maintain and repair the vehicle fleet and small power equipment.
- Assist the Buildings & Grounds Department as needed to ensure quality services for guests and staff.
- Plan and prioritize projects and work time for efficiency
- Work alongside, train, and supervise seasonal/volunteer B&G staff
- Ability to read, write, and follow written and oral instructions in English.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- General knowledge of welding and ability to weld preferred.
- Must possess a valid, USA state issued driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and comply with YMCA driving rules to be approved to operate YMCA vehicles.
- Must meet acceptable criminal background check standards.
- A high level of attention to detail and ability to thoroughly complete each job task.
- Willing and able to be on-call at least one night each week if living on-grounds.
- Have CDL or ability to obtain
- Good interpersonal and leadership skills, and teaching/training skills
- Proven experience with ground maintenance operations in a commercial resort setting.
- Experience with gardening, flowers, weed control, mowing, and sprinkler systems

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully:
- Ability to independently work from ladders and scaffolding, on roofs, in crawl spaces and attics.
- Ability to work while standing all day, with frequent bending and working with arms extended overhead.
- Occasional heavy lifting and ability to carry objects up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions.
