Job Description

Lead a Cabin. Run a Program. Shape an Unforgettable Summer.

Spend your summer making a real impact at Camp Chief Ouray, part of YMCA of the Rockies. As a Cabin Counselor Specialist, you’ll take on a dual leadership role—caring for a cabin group of campers while also leading one of our core program areas.

This position is ideal for experienced camp leaders who love working with youth, enjoy teaching specialized skills, and thrive in an active, mission-driven environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Live with and mentor a cabin group of 8–10 campers, supporting their physical, social, and emotional well-being

  • Collaborate with a co-counselor and program staff to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging camp experience

  • Lead program delivery within your specialty area, including curriculum instruction, activity setup, and cleanup

  • Develop lesson plans and teach high-quality, age-appropriate activities

  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of program facilities and equipment

  • Uphold and enforce all program-specific safety standards and protocols

  • Participate in staff training and take on one weekend of camp responsibilities during the summer

  • Contribute to a positive camp culture and assist other departments as needed

Who You Are

  • Preferably 19 years of age or older

  • Experienced working with youth in a summer camp or similar setting

  • Skilled in one program area (ropes, arts & crafts, or riflery)

  • Organized, reliable, and able to manage both cabin and program responsibilities

  • Strong communicator with excellent customer service skills

  • CPR/First Aid certified—or willing to obtain certification

  • Willing to earn additional certifications related to your program area

  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus

Our Culture & Mission

At YMCA of the Rockies, our mission is rooted in building healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. We rely on our staff to lead with integrity and live out our core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith, while actively supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Work Environment

  • Hands-on role in an outdoor mountain camp setting

  • Work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Hiking on rugged terrain as part of daily camp life

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and work in physically dynamic environments

Why This Role Matters

  • Combine mentorship with specialized instruction

  • Grow leadership, teaching, and risk-management skills

  • Be part of a tight-knit, mission-driven camp community

  • Create meaningful experiences campers carry with them for life

If you’re ready to lead with purpose and share your skills in an unforgettable camp setting, we’d love to have you on our team.
