Job Description

Lead with Precision. Coach with Purpose. Set the Standard for Safety.

Join Camp Chief Ouray, part of YMCA of the Rockies, as the Target Sports Director—a senior program leader responsible for delivering safe, engaging, and mission-driven target sports programming. This role oversees archery, riflery, and related target sports, ensuring the highest standards of instruction, safety, and camper experience.

If you’re a confident leader with strong technical skills, a passion for youth development, and a commitment to risk management, this is your opportunity to shape a best-in-class camp program.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the safe and effective operation of all target sports programming, including archery, riflery, and specialty activities

  • Ensure full compliance with Colorado Child Care Licensing, American Camp Association, and USA Archery standards

  • Recruit, train, schedule, coach, and evaluate target sports staff to ensure consistent, high-quality instruction

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that promote skill development, confidence, and sportsmanship

  • Conduct regular staff skill assessments and provide ongoing coaching and mid-summer performance feedback

  • Oversee equipment procurement, inventory, inspection, maintenance, and replacement

  • Establish and enforce standardized operating procedures for all target sports areas

  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe ranges and activity spaces

  • Collaborate with program leadership and other departments to support smooth daily operations and integrated camper experiences

  • Provide exceptional customer service through clear communication, professionalism, and leadership presence

  • Assume one weekend of camp leadership responsibilities during the summer

Who You Are

  • At least 21 years of age

  • USA Archery Level 1 certification (or higher) through an accredited organization

  • Minimum of 16 documented hours of riflery instruction or NRA Instructor Certification

  • Meets Colorado Child Care Licensing experience requirements

  • Previous experience working with youth, preferably in a summer camp setting

  • Strong organizational, leadership, and time-management skills

  • CPR/First Aid certified—or willing to obtain certification

  • Calm, professional, and detail-oriented with a strong safety mindset

  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus

Our Culture & Mission

At YMCA of the Rockies, we put Christian principles into practice by building healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Our leaders model our core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith, while actively supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across our camp community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability and willingness to meet YMCA and DOT requirements to operate YMCA vehicles, including 15-passenger minibuses

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license (CDL if required) with a satisfactory driving record

  • Ability to obtain a DOT Medical Card and complete YMCA driver training

Work Environment

  • Dynamic outdoor camp setting with indoor and outdoor responsibilities

  • Work in all weather conditions and hike on rugged terrain

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and work in physically active environments

Why This Leadership Role Matters

  • Set the tone for safety, professionalism, and excellence

  • Mentor and develop staff leaders

  • Create a target sports program campers trust and remember

  • Be part of a mission-driven organization that values purpose over profit

If you’re ready to lead with integrity, precision, and purpose—this is your summer to make a lasting impact.
