POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Races and Events Manager, the ‘Race Crew’ will assist with the preparation and production of events at Winter Park Resort in alpine, freestyle skiing, freeride, snowboarding, and big mountain events. These events may include sanctioned international, national, divisional, collegiate, high school, marketing, employee, private groups, and club events. ‘Race Crew’ members are expected to act in an official capacity at most events. This employee will be required to satisfactorily complete the WPRA snowmobile licensing course and maintain a current snowmobile operator’s license. This is a job for an advanced skier, who enjoys working out on the hill and takes pride in being part of a team. One of the primary facets of this position is mountainside fencing in all conditions. The ‘Race Crew’ will follow all Winter Park policies and procedures, all applicable laws (federal, state, and local), and all health and sanitation codes.

WAGE:

The base pay range above represents the low and high end of Winter Park Resort’s hourly pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to experience, education, training, location, merit system, quantity or quality of production, responsibilities, and regular and/or necessary travel. The range listed is just one component of Winter Park Resort’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include many region-specific benefits.

Hourly pay range: $24.00 -29.00

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Regularly create and execute plans for fencing with Alpine Director, NSCD Alpine Director, Freestyle Director and the WPCC Races & Event Manager
• Assigns Race Crew to daily duties at morning Race Crew meeting
• Assists in hiring Race Crew candidates ahead of winter season
• Assists in ordering and preparations ahead of/during winter season
• Assists in providing the Race Crew opportunity to attend regular, required clinics for their certification
• Works with team to create weekly schedule
• Attends necessary meetings with Mountain Operations representatives
• Oversees and directs Race Crew on a daily basis
• Ability to lead weekly meeting with Race Crew as needed
• Install fencing and closures
• Help set courses
• Set-up/use various timing equipment
• Assist with timing of events
• Use communication equipment during races and meets
• Prepare start and finish areas for events/races
• Help with the set-up of race communications
• Responsible for the removal and storage of equipment
• Maintain race equipment
• Perform general course maintenance: slipping, shoveling, raking, etc.
• Promote work area cleanliness
• Support the Winter Park Way in work area with work group
• Meets with Technical Delegates from various governing bodies to welcome them to their venue and answer any questions that arise
• Acts as Chief of Race for sanctioned Alpine Events as needed / empowers qualified Crew to act as Chief of Race
• Readily supports all events, as needed including those pertaining to: Freestyle, Big Mountain, Snowboard, Slopestyle, Private Groups and Marketing events
• Current Winter Park Snowmobiling training and certification required once course is offered
• Directs other key certified staff i.e. Chief of Course, Chief of Timing, Chief of Marshals, etc.

Other Duties:

• Assists in training new Race Crew/creates training plan for orientation
• Set-up and operate timing equipment
• Responsible for course preparation and setting skills (closures, starts, finish areas, ski racing protection)
• Complete course dismantling after events/races
• Set-up race communications equipment (phones, headsets, and radios)
• Perform maintenance and repairs on race equipment (phone lines, timing equipment, public address system, poles and banners)
• Officiate in other official positions during races and competitions (as required)
• Administer race policy and procedures
• Publish and post start orders, result sheets, and present awards to participants
• Preside over seed meetings when acting as jury
• Maintain a friendly, congenial, and helpful attitude while effectively dealing with guests and other employees
• Report and/or correct unsafe conditions regarding equipment and area of work, or elsewhere on the area
• Keep work area neat and orderly
• Perform other duties as directed by Supervisors/Coordinators/Managers
• Under Direction of Race Coordinator/Race Crew Supervisor, lead and instruct groups of race crew members and volunteers at various tasks
• Lead and instruct at Cranmer Race Venue/Pay to Race volunteers

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

• High School Diploma or GED, General Education Development (High School equivalency) – required
• College bachelor’s degree; or suitable experience equivalent – preferred

Experience:

• Required – must be able to ski Black Diamonds in all weather conditions with equipment in hand i.e. fences, drills, shovels, etc.
• Preferred – one (1) year of Race Crew experience; and/or USSA certified referee; or chief of race

Qualifications and Skills:

• Advanced skiing ability
• Must be 18 years or older
• Valid Colorado driver’s license and clean driving record – Required to drive snowmobile
• Skis and comfortable ski boots are a must for long days on mountain
• May operate snowmobiles, use drills, flex pole, fencing, shovels, rakes, timing equipment, stop watches, radios, computers, copy machines, etc.
