Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for training on a variety of heavy and light equipment in maintaining County roads and bridges for safe and efficient accessible public travel. This job description is designed for those individuals with minimal to no experience with heavy and light equipment operations, but who possess a CDL.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Trains in the operation of heavy and light equipment and duties found in roads and bridges, airports, and fairgrounds.
  • Learns snowplow truck for plowing snow and sanding duties.
  • Drives pick-up trucks for checking road conditions, hauling light loads, parts pickup, and other errands.
  • Learns to operate water truck, loaders, and backhoe.
  • Gains knowledge of asphalt equipment and asphalt procedures (crack sealer/roller/asphalt patching).
  • Performs preventive and general maintenance on all equipment, which includes greasing, changing oil and filters; checking battery and coolant levels, lights and tires; checking and repairing and rotating tires, and washing vehicles.
  • Builds, installs, and repairs bridges, fences, and cattle guards.
  • Performs manual labor tasks for clearing trees and other materials from the roadway, patching asphalt roads, shoveling materials, and others.
  • Responsible for the installation and repair of road signage per the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) Standards
  • May be required to respond to local emergencies, i.e., fires or flooding.
  • Ability to assist Airports or Fairgrounds as needed.
  • Learns to weld broken equipment and fabricates equipment parts when required.
  • Recognizes any mechanical problems and demonstrates safe operations of all equipment
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or general education diploma (GED); 0-4 years of service/experience.

 

 

Special Qualifications:

Must possess a State of Colorado commercial driver’s license, Class B (minimum) with tanker and airbrakes endorsements. The requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment. Ability to acquire flagging card, MSHA training, enroll in LTAP, and First-Aid and CPR certification within six months of appointment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to complete daily time card and maintenance work orders.
  • Ability to communicate with the public on County projects and operations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to learn to operate light and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, the public, supervisors, and other County officials.
  • Demonstrate consistency with timeliness and attendance.
  • Demonstrate a positive and supportive demeanor.
